Handel Scenic Road Lamp

Sale price$19,500.00

The Handel Scenic Road Lamp is a superb example of the landscape artistry that made the Handel Company of Meriden, Connecticut one of the premier lamp manufacturers of the early 20th century. The 16-inch domed shade is both reverse-painted and obverse-painted, depicting a tranquil country road winding through a landscape of birch trees, lush foliage, and rolling terrain beneath a glowing sky. The combination of reverse and obverse painting creates exceptional depth and dimension, the trees and foliage appear to exist at different planes within the glass, producing a remarkably atmospheric, almost three-dimensional scene.

When illuminated, the shade transforms into a luminous panorama, with the warm sky tones glowing behind the silhouetted trees and the road drawing the eye into the peaceful distance. The painting quality is outstanding, showcasing the skill of Handel's European-trained decorating artists.

Both the shade and base are signed. The shade sits on the highly desirable figural base known as the "Water Bearer" or "Rebecca at the Well" a sculptural patinated metal form depicting a classical female figure. This is one of Handel's most sought-after bases, and finding it paired with a scenic shade of this caliber makes for an exceptional and important lamp.
